The Hindu Delhi gets a Peace Pagoda NEW DELHI: Yet another monument was added to the historic city of Delhi on Wednesday as Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit inaugurated “Vishwa Shanti Stupa” – World Peace Pagoda -- at Indraprastha Park on Ring Road in the presence of the Dalai Lama and Delhi’s Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna. Describing the monument as a new landmark of Delhi, Ms. Dikshit said it symbolises promotion of peace and human values. She expressed happiness that the Stupa had been inaugurated on the birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to whom the cause of peace was very dear and who was instrumental in spreading the message of peace across the globe. The Chief Minister said the Vishwa Shanti Stupa was an initiative of the Shanti Stupa Society and the Delhi Development Authority. She also disclosed that while the plan for building the Shanti Stupa was proposed by Pandit Nehru, Most Ven. Nichidatsu Fujii had donated his award money of the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for this project which was utilised as seed money. The project has been completed in three years at a cost of Rs.2 crore. Built in Indian style, the Stupa is 30 metres high and has a diameter of 37 metres. Accessible to the physically challenged, it would be surrounded by a beautiful Japanese-style rock garden. |
